“The KICK” Alabama beat Auburn 25–23 on a 52-yard field goal by Van Tiffin as time expired. A close game was elevated by the “epic” fourth quarter “with the teams trading haymakers and the lead changing hands four times.” Alabama drove from their own 20-yard-line in the final minute, including a fourth-down flanker reverse to keep the drive alive. As recently as 2015, longtime sports reporter Paul Finebaum remarked, “It’s still the greatest football game I’ve ever seen.”
